Yes. Calm beaches, space and plenty of villas with private pools make it one of the easier areas for families.
It helps. The area spreads out, so most guests use a car or taxis between the beach, Laguna and Boat Avenue.
Bang Tao is longer and livelier with beach clubs and Laguna. Surin is smaller and smarter. Both are calm next to Patong.
For the beach and the beach clubs, stay near the Bang Tao sand or Laguna. For a quieter, smarter feel, choose Surin. Families often take a private pool villa on the hillside, while couples like a condominium near Boat Avenue.
Yes. We have private pool villas across Bang Tao and Surin, from smaller homes to larger group villas, alongside more affordable condominiums near the beach.
Bang Tao & Surin guide
Local knowledge from our team on where to stay, what to do and how to get here.
Bang Tao and Surin sit side by side on Phuket’s west coast. Bang Tao Beach is one of the island’s longest, with roughly six to eight kilometres of soft sand running from the Surin headland north to Layan. Surin Beach, just to the south, is a short golden cove between rocky headlands, quieter and more grown-up.
Our holiday rentals here are mostly apartments, with a smaller choice of pool villas. The apartments suit couples, friends and longer stays, and many come with a communal pool, a gym and a washing machine. Some look out to sea, and several sit within a short walk of the sand.
Families and groups usually choose a pool villa, with a private pool for the children and room to spread out after a day on the beach. Villas tend to sit a little inland on quiet lanes, a short drive from Bang Tao Beach. It is a calmer base than Patong, for people who like their evenings to end over dinner.
Vacation rentals give you more space and freedom than a hotel room: cook when you like and keep your own hours. Every home we list here is run by our own team, so the photos match what you find on arrival, and someone local is on hand during your stay.
This is beach life without the crowds of Patong. Bang Tao is long enough to find your own patch of sand even in high season: the north end towards Layan is much quieter, while the south end has more restaurants, bars and activity.
Surin has a different character. Since May 2025 there are no food stalls or vendors on the sand, so bring water and snacks; Tukta, on the rocks, still serves food. In high season arrive early, as the beach fills from late morning, and try the quieter south end. It suits anyone who wants a quiet swim and a book.
The area spreads out, though. The beach roads are busy and pavements are patchy, so most people rely on taxis, ride-hailing apps or a hire car. For shopping, groceries and the Friday market, see our Cherngtalay guide.
It is not the place for walk-everywhere nightlife. Evenings mean dinner, a beach club or a quiet drink. For bars on your doorstep, Patong suits better; for somewhere quieter still, look north to Nai Thon.
The dry season, from November to April, brings the calmest sea and the best beach weather. The water at Bang Tao and Surin is usually flat and clear, ideal for swimming and paddleboarding, and sunsets are reliable. It is also the busiest time, especially over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, so book your holiday rental early if your dates are fixed.
From May to October the southwest monsoon reaches the west coast. Rain comes in heavy bursts rather than all day, but waves build, rip currents form and red flags go up along both beaches. Surin develops a strong shore break and currents in this season, so never swim when the red flag is flying, and stay near lifeguards. The beaches are quieter and the hills turn lush.
Bang Tao and Surin are among the closest west coast beaches to Phuket International Airport, about 20 to 30 minutes by car. Kamala is about 10 to 15 minutes south, Patong roughly 20 to 35 minutes over the coast road, and Phuket Town around 35 to 45 minutes.
Getting around is easiest by taxi, ride-hailing app or hire car. Scooters are popular, but the roads are busy, so only ride if you are experienced and properly licensed. We can arrange an airport transfer so a driver meets you when you land.
