Just a few minutes south of Phuket International Airport (HKT) is a 2km long strip of sand called Nai Yang Beach. The beach isn’t known for being so scenic or for its numerous activities. It is, however, another of the mellow and laid-back beaches along the northwest coast of Phuket. You won’t find too many tourists here, which could be what you are looking for on your holiday. Also, the town isn’t well-developed, as this is a low-income Thai village called Ban Wang Li.
The northernmost half of Nai Yang Beach has many pine trees, offering welcome shade from the hot midday sun. This part happens to be the southern border of a large park called Sirinat National Park. Therefore, vendors and stores are not allowed on the beach in the area, with no commercial activities of any sort tolerated. A quiet area, indeed!
The central area of Nai Yang Beach has a white sand beach bordered by a good selection of beach-type (unassuming) restaurants, bars, and beach apparel convenience stores. And to the south are three large resorts (Coqoon Spa - The Slate, Nai Yang Beach Resort & Spa - Ruan Mai Naiyang Beach Resort) separated by a river and surrounded by lush vegetation. Additionally, a mini cape and tiny islet mark the beach southern end, overlooked by the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa.
There is also some nightlife in Nai Yang, a lot of it! You'll find twenty or so clubs and bars on 'Bar Street' in the south part of Nai Yang, generally filled with Thais and expats.
On Phuket Island northwest side, a short five-minute drive from Cocoon villas you'll find Nai Thon Beach.
Approaching Nai Thon from the north leads you to the only street in town, which helps when trying to explain to your friends where to find you on the never-too-crowded beach. Therefore, making things easier for everyone! The main idea in most parts of Phuket: easy going, no stress, no worries!
Moreover, as you come from the north, the beach is on your right. To your left are various restaurants, as well as beach apparel and souvenir shops facing the beach. We counted thirteen shops as we drove by.
Nightlife in Nai Thon is pretty much non-existent. One of the main reasons why international travelers, as well as local visitors, choose to stay in this quiet area for their holiday.
If you find yourself craving action, the drive to Patong Beach nightlife and entertainment center will take you around 50-minutes, one-way. Alternatively, you can head over to the Nai Yang Beach 'Bar Street' area, where there are a few dozen clubs and bars.
There are some great places to eat in Nai Thon, and the Coffee Icecream and Cake Shop is just one example. Located at Naithonburi Beach Resort, a few minutes down the road from Cocoon villas, this lovely bakery has excellent desserts and good service. This air-conditioned bistro, with both indoor and outdoor seating, is reasonably priced, considering the great-tasting treats.
For dinner, head over Nai Thon Beach Club, one of our favorite places to eat when in town. This cozy little Thai-German restaurant serves delicious portions at moderate prices. Try the cocktails!
